Description
LUDWIG KMOCH (1897-1971) WIENER INTERNATIONALER SCHACHKONGRESS. 1922.
33x20 inches, 84x52 cm. Gesellschaft fur Graphische Industrie, Vienna.
Condition A- / B+: minor restoration along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears and minor restoration in top margin.
Ladislaus "Ludwig" Kmoch was a self-taught cartoonist and caricaturist who worked for the satirical magazines Muskete and Simplicissimus, until he joined the Social Democratic newspaper Das Kleine Blatt in 1929. Kmoch designed this poster for the 1922 Viennese International Chess Congress, one of the first great tournaments after World War I, including all of the chess stars of the day. The black and white rooks stand monumentally like castles marking the entrance of Vienna, with a rendering of the Trade Fair Palace below the text.
