Eliot family copy of the first edition of The Waste Land. Copy belonging to T.S. Eliot's niece, Theodora Eliot Smith, with her neat ink ownership signature on the front free endpaper. Ms. Smith, born in 1904, was the daughter of Eliot's sister, Charlotte Eliot, and George Lawrence Smith. In custom folding cloth box, with leather spine label stamped in gilt, "The Wasteland. First Edition. Eliot Family Copy." The great poem of the twentieth century, and Eliot's most famous work. This copy reads "mount in" (for "mountain") in line 339; second state of the binding, in the stiff black cloth. Gallup A6b; Hayward 332.
Condition
Volume spine faded a bit, a touch of rubbing to extremities, a few faint finger marks to covers; very good or better condition, an attractive copy with significant association.
