Eminent landscape photographer Steve Crouch (1915-1983) was a longtime resident of Carmel, California. He worked as an assistant to Ansel Adams and taught at the Ansel Adams Workshop. Crouch was a writer in addition to being a talented photographer, and published a number of photography books, including Steinbeck Country (1973) and Fog and Sun, Sea and Stone (1980). His work was also included, along with that of Adams, Wynn Bullock, Edward Weston, Cole Weston, and Eliot Porter, in Not Man Apart (1965), a book of poetry by Robinson Jeffers published by the Sierra Club. When Crouch died, his archive was rescued by fellow photographer Al Weber and ultimately placed in the McHenry Library Special Collections unit at UC Santa Cruz.
