Item Details
Description
Woodstock (1970) Documentary 40+ 16mm Work Print Film Reels Used in Editing Suite - This lot represents a true, once-in-a-lifetime piece of music history, as these are the 16mm work print film reels from the 1970 Academy Award-winning documentary, "Woodstock", by Michael Wadleigh. For 50 years, the documentary has been a primary focus of reference for popular culture historians, musicologists, musicians, American studies scholars, hippies, and new students of 1960s culture. It is one of the single most important films from that era and subject, and to this day this seminal film is still revered as such. In 1996, Woodstock was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". This lot encompasses a diverse collection of 16mm film-reel-artifacts that give a snapshot in time regarding what occurred on Max Yasgur's muddy fields. This lot is a varied arrangement of film reels containing over several hours of original footage captured from Micheal Wadleigh's negatives. During the event Wadleigh and his team undertook the monumental task of documenting the event. Arriving on site August 15, 1969 with over a thousand reels of film and a crew of 9-12 camera operators. History reveals that after the event was over Michael Wadleigh was left with over 120 miles of footage which, over the following months (in a LA studio) he and his team edited down to 184 minutes. These original 40 plus 16mm "work prints" (no audio) are on Kodak film stock used in the editing suite while Michael Wadleigh, Thelma Schoonmaker (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing) and Martin Scorcese cut and screened the film prior to its 1970 release. Also in the lot, several audio "mag" reels (magnetic film) are included. These were typically used on a "mag dubber" machine and this case Michael Wadliegh (and team) conducted the synch playback of the film during the editing process. The Kodak film code (+) listed on the reels are also accurate to the year in which the film was being compiled (1969). After 50 plus years, some of the original boxes which housed the reels have also survived and on most of them hand written notes/labels indicate subject matter. The famed Wadleigh/Maurice label is even visible on some of these examples. These are true and rare artifacts that any dedicated Woodstock collector should own. Opportunities to acquire objects like this do not come up often, as this lot is not only unique to a cultural milestone, but also a highly historical film. Up until now nothing has surfaced so rare attached to the 1970 documentary of the Woodstock Festival, a benchmark film so important that it has since defined how documentary filmmakers approach the art form.
