Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, Syrian Provincial, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A beautiful gray-green steatite stamp seal of a circular, bifacial form with a centralized suspension hole drilled through the body. The front face bears the image of a right-facing bird with a broad tail, outstretched wings, and a narrow head with an aquiline beak. The reverse face features a large floral pattern with a central columnar element surrounded on the bottom with bulbous, serrated projections. Custom putty impressions included. Size: 0.875" Diameter (2.2 cm); 2.2" H (5.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002

Light abrasions around peripheries, otherwise intact and very good. Wonderful preservation to incised details on both stamp faces.
