Featured in this lot is this Reycita Naranjo (1926-2003), Santa Clara Pueblo, 'Black and Black' pottery bowl. The pottery vessel shows iconic Santa Clara Pueblo construction with a figural coyote carved into the outside wall of the pottery vessel. Potters at the pueblo were making many pieces of black pottery in the late 1800s for tourists and nearby households in Santa Fe and Espanola. Santa Clara potters used a decorating method not used by other pueblos—that is they impressed a design into the wet clay, such as bear paw designs. Additionally, the potters at Santa Clara made red pottery and polychrome, too. Reycita Naranjo, of Santa Clara Pueblo, was born in 1926 and is from a large family of potters, all of whom are exceptional artists. Her sisters, Clara Shije, Elizabeth Naranjo, Florence Browning, Mary Singer, and Mary Carlisle, all are recognized as outstanding potters, including her mother, Pablita Tafoya Chavarria. Reycita had been an award winner at Santa Fe Indian Market since 1981. She had been featured in numerous publications, as well. The condition of this pottery bowl is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this bowl are 2 1/4" x 6 1/4" x 6 1/4". (30058)
