Description
Large antique original landscape painting by Hudson River School artist Christoper Pearse Cranch (1813 - 1892). Oil on canvas, housed in a period frame. Image size, 39.5L x 25H, overall 49L x 34H. Artist Bio: Christopher Pearse Cranch was a landscape, still life, and portrait painter who grew up in Washington DC where his father was Chief Justice of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia. He studied art briefly with his brother, Edward, who subsequently became a lawyer, and then graduated from Columbian College in DC. From 1835 to 1842, he attended Harvard Divinity School, becoming a Unitarian minister and serving in congregations in Maine, Richmond, Washington, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Boston.Cranch eventually gave up the ministry, and after 1840 dedicated himself to landscape painting. He spent a couple of years in New York City, and in 1846 left for Italy with his wife, Elizabeth De Windt, who encouraged his painting career. They returned to New York City in 1849, but from 1853 to 1863 lived in Paris where Cranch worked diligently on his landscape painting and from where he took sketching trips to Italy, Switzerland and the French countryside. \"He was among the first American artists to become an advocate of the Barbizon School* of landscape painting, extolling its virtues in letters published in the Crayon.\" (Harding, 131) From 1863 to 1873 Cranch was active in New York City, and in spring of 1864, he was advanced to full membership in the National Academy of Design*. He maintained studios on Broadway and in his home at Fishkill, New York, and exhibited regularly at the Academy throughout the 1860s. His last entry at an Annual Exhibition was in 1872. During this time, he was also active with the Artists Fund Society* and the American Society of Painters in Water Color. From 1873 until his death, he and his wife lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cranch continued painting landscapes, but increasingly his interest turned to poetry and art-related essay writing. He was the younger brother of the portrait painter, John Cranch
