Description

The Spectator is a great source of information about life and manners in English society in the early 1700s. It was "one of the boldest experiments in journalism," intentionally containing no news and made popular mainly due to its fine essays by Joseph Addison. The Spectator, with Sketches of the Lives of the Authors, an Index, and Explanatory Notes. Volume 3 and 4 bound into one book, plus volume 9 and 10, also bound into one book. Published 1847 by Crissy and Markley in Philadelphia. Both volumes rebound with original spine labels retained (spine labels were switched when rebound). Near fine later bindings with text blocks somewhat toned, but completely intact. 4 x 6.25. 544 and 545 pp.
