Western Europe, probably France, England, or Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A functional spotting scope of a characteristically tubular form with an adjustable eye piece on the back and a wide frontal lens with a cap suspended from a chain. Beneath the scope tube is a hinged mounting pin that fits within a receptacle atop a wooden tripod mount with extendable legs. Spotting scopes like this example were used in high-altitude areas for studying astronomy and monitoring ground troop movement. They were also used on naval vessels for navigational purposes and for spotting distant land masses. Size (on tripod): 15.8" L x 1.8" W x 14.1" H (40.1 cm x 4.6 cm x 35.8 cm)
