**First Time At Auction**

Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 10th century CE. A stunning marble relief of Christ, draped in a robe and holding the gospel. With both arms resting on the bottom border of his frame, as though he is peering from a window, the savior gazes outwards from wide open eyes, which represent his wisdom and holiness. A full head of hair sits above his flat nose, petite mouth, and pointed beard, while a cruciform halo crowns his head. The letters "IC" are carved to his right and "XC" to his left, forming the most widely used Christogram in eastern Christianity, the ICXC Christogram (a traditional abbreviation of the Greek words for Jesus Christ). A remarkable example from the early Christian church! Size: 1.7" W x 1.8" H (4.3 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
