**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A pewter vase with a tall neck and a cherub peering around the side. The body is a rounded shape with broad shoulders and the neck rises up to a flared rim. The cherub represents Cupid, the Roman god of desire, and he is usually depicted in a nude childlike state with wings and flowing hair, such as in this example. Cupid stands on the shoulders of the vessel and leans against the neck with the small wings extended from his back. A long arm and perhaps part of a leg protrude from the opposite side of the neck, indicating that there may have been a larger adult sized figure that Cupid was looking at such as Venus. This vase is a lovely example of the playful and dynamic figures that Roman artisans incorporated into their pieces. Size: 2.86" W x 5.75" H (7.3 cm x 14.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection acquired from Goldberg Auctions, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1968
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
