**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A beautiful, mold-formed, hollow terracotta votive female figure rendered standing in contrapposto with her left leg bent at the knee and her weight shifted to the right leg, while her right arm is bent at the elbow, and her hand perhaps placed on her hip (though not visible beneath her garments). She is wearing a voluminous chiton with a himation wrapped around her arms and shoulders, and a plethora of drapery folds hug her form in some places and cascade over it in others. Size: 4.25" L x 4" W x 11.5" H (10.8 cm x 10.2 cm x 29.2 cm)

During the Hellenistic Period, Greeks had access knowledge about the past through institutions like the Library of Alexandria, creating a sense of history and connection to the Greeks who had come before them. Prominent Hellenistic art collectors commissioned pieces based on public statues from the earlier Classical Period, and smaller, more available art forms like this statue followed the naturalistic tenets of the classical style. Terracotta figures like this one have been found in private dwellings where they may have been part of a shrine or had a religious purpose. Others decorated tombs and sanctuaries.

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonhams, London, Knightsbridge Antiquities Auction (May 8, 2013, part of lot 157); ex-Joseph Klein collection, New York, USA, formed between 1941 and 1980, thence by descent

Missing head. Area from the knees down has been repaired from several pieces. Figure is hollow with hole in back. Expected small nicks, scratches, and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits throughout.
