Description
Greece, Cyprus, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 3rd century BCE. A Cypriot votive statue of a male figure wearing a cloak over his shoulders, with its fabric folds precisely delineated. He stands with his left foot advanced in a pose suggesting forward movement, and holding what may be a container of incense in his left hand. The man faces forward with large almond-shaped eyes framed by arched brows that lead to an aquiline nose, and slightly parted lips nearly enveloped by a thick mustache and beard, this visage topped by a pointed headdress. An intriguing piece that was once painted; note the remains of white pigment on the robe, body, and headdress - and the red pigment on his beard. Size: 10.75" H (27.3 cm); 13.125" H (33.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Following the Persian Empire's absorption of Cyprus in 525 BCE, contact with the wealthy Eastern Greek cities on the western coast of Asia Minor increased, as they had also fallen under Persian rule. The influence of Greek sculptural style is evident in this statue with its relatively rigid, 'wooden' pose reminiscent of Greek Archaic art.
Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonham's London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 154; ex-Joseph Klein collection, formed in New York, New York, USA between 1941 and 1980, thence by descent
