James Monroe & John Quincy Adams Signed Ship's Passport Fragment
The bottom of a partly printed and partly manuscript document on vellum, almost certainly a scalloped ship's passport, signed by 5th U.S. President James Monroe (1758-1831) as "James Monroe" and by then U.S. Secretary of State and future 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) as "John Quincy Adams" at lower right. The document, numbered 116, corresponded to authorization issued on June 3, 1823 pertaining to a ship in New London, Connecticut. Also countersigned by Captain Richard Law (ca. 1761-1845), a Revolutionary War veteran who served as customs collector for the port of New London between 1822-1830, as "Richd. Law / Collector" at bottom. Bearing an embossed wafer presidential seal in the lower left corner. Expected wear including light folds and scattered foxing. Trimmed at top, and minor mounting traces verso. The fragment measures 10.875" x 5.25."
