Description

John F. Kennedy Manuscript with 120+ Words in his Hand, Discussing Latin American Policy, Foreign Investment & More

A 3pp manuscript inscribed by 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), featuring over 120 words in his hand, and including four typographical and editorial changes. The pages comprise notes for the draft of a speech or article. Though undated, JFK's emphasis on Democratic leadership suggests that the notes possibly date from his 1960 presidential election campaign. On blue-ruled cream legal-sized sheets. The pages have been numbered in another hand. With expected wear including paper folds, a few extra wrinkles, and isolated edge chipping. Page 2 has a stain running diagonally at top corresponding to an old piece of adhesive tape. Minor mounting traces verso. Else near fine. 8" x 12.5."

In this wonderful group of handwritten notes, John F. Kennedy discusses an array of topics including Latin American diplomatic policy, foreign investment, and the domestic economy. Of especial interest is Kennedy's reference to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the lion of the Democratic Party, in the context of the Good Neighbor Policy of the World War II-era.

The succinct and forceful language found in this manuscript anticipates the type of eloquent and commanding speeches Kennedy would make in office. One of the most interesting strike through edits in the manuscript is found on the first page, where Kennedy replaces the word "we," presumably meaning Americans, with the more loaded phrase "Democratic Pres."

If foreign countries wish private foreign capital invested, and this must be their decision, then I would think they have to give reasonable assurances against confiscation. I emphasize that this is a decision for the country involved - Private capital is free to invest or not to--
