Jackie Kennedy As a Carefree Teenager With a Cigarette, Famous Original Photograph

A black and white photograph, measuring 3.5" x 4.5", no place [Hammersmith Farm, Newport, Rhode Island], circa 1945-47. A cheeky teenaged Jackie Bouvier smiles for the camera while holding a long cigarette holder and her elbow resting on a fence. Dressed in a white blouse and dark, high-waisted pants, the future First Lady had clearly cemented her chic fashion sense, even at a young age. On verso the image has been stamped "Photo by Lloyd S. Pauley." The photograph is silked, and has light edge toning and wear. Other fantastic photographs and correspondences from this collection can be found in this auction from lot numbers 173-179.

Pauley was a Rhode Island photographer, who also captured images of the Auchincloss family while at the Hammersmith Farm. The Victorian mansion, located in Newport, Rhode Island, was the childhood home of Jackie and the site of her wedding reception in 1953. Although Jackie Kennedy was a heavy smoker, with an estimated three-pack-a-day habit, very few photographs exist of her smoking. She made a point of not allowing the press to take photographs of her smoking or to reference it in print.
