Emperor Hirohito Signed Concert Program in Japanese Characters
1p, measuring 6" x 9", Paris, dated June 3, 1921. A French program for a classical music concert held in honor of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince of Japan. Signed with Japanese characters at the top left corner by Hirohito in pencil. At the right top corner is a pencil authentication signature, also in Japanese characters and done in pencil. Accompanying the program is a small note, written in French, explaining the identity and placement of the signatures. Provenance from M. Casier-Charpentier, a private collection, painter, and contemporary arts inspector from Paris. With light toning throughout and slightly uneven edges. Minor soiling to front and at edges. Boldly signed.
Hirohito (1901-1989) was just 20 years old at the time of signing this program. From March 3 to September 3, 1921, he made official visits to the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Vatican City, the Netherlands, and Belgium; it was his first trip ever to Europe. Five years later, Hirohito assumed the throne after the death of his father, Yoshihito. He became the 124th emperor of Japan and reigned until 1947, and was the longest-lived and longest reigning Japanese emperor and monarch in the world.
