James Buchanan (1791-1868) served as 15th President of the United States from 1857-1861. He advocated for states' rights and many historians criticize his inability to address the issue of slavery or secession earlier, which may have stymied the Civil War. Lewis Cass (1782-1866) served as U.S. Ambassador to France under President Andrew Jackson and Secretary of State under James Buchanan.
