Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on board, done in the Naive art style of Aaron Birnbaum (Ukrainian-American, 1895-1998). A hand-painted inscription at lower left corner reads, "A. Birnbaum". Image depicts a striking bouquet of wildflowers, perched upon a vibrant plaid background. Full of expressive texture and bold color choice. This handsome piece would be a fine addition to any collection. This framed piece measures approximately 21.5" x 17.5", with an approximate image sight of 17.5" x 13.5".
Folk artist Aaron Birnbaum (Ukrainian-American, 1895-1998) was a New York dress manufacturer who only took up painting in his retirement. He gained immediate renown for his paintings, but initially thought nothing of his newly discovered talents. Said Birnbaum, "I was alone in the house and I didn't know what to do. I had gone to school for designing and knew how to sketch, so I figured I will start to paint. I bought brushes and paint, and all this here. And I started painting. I made the first picture. I figure, I'll paint it and I'll throw it out." Birnbaum's work is a delight in the act of simple observation; a celebration of the everyday sights and experiences that fulfill each and every one of us.
