1856 New Jersey Governor and Senator Aaron Ogden Oil on Canvas Painting Artist Signed and Dated by D. B. Walcutt
1856-Dated Pre Civil War, Original Oil on Canvas Painting of New Jersey Governor Aaron Ogden (1756-1839), Painted by artist and Signed by David Broderick Walcutt, Original Gold Gilt Wood Framed, Extremely Fine.
Vivid 30'' x 25'' Oil Painting on Canvas of Aaron Ogden, who served as both a Senator and Governor of New Jersey. Signed and dated on the back: "D. B. Walcutt - Painter - 1856." Walcutt was a New York artist who was born in 1825. One short 1" small tear in the canvas on his cheek which can be conserved. Aaron Ogden (1756-1839) was a United States Senator and Governor of New Jersey. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1773, and served in the American Revolutionary War as a lieutenant and later major. After studying law, Ogden was admitted to the bar in 1784 and commenced his practice in New Jersey. He served in the United States Senate (1801-1803) and in the New Jersey General Assembly (1803-1812). Ogden was elected Governor of New Jersey in 1812, and served during the War of 1812 period.
This Oil Painting is quite attractive. Its colors are quite rich and full of nice contrast. The canvas is hung on wide decorative gold gilt wooden frame bearing an engraved plaque below with Ogden's birth, death, and years as New Jersey Governor. Conservation should be considered as there are two small sealed holes near Ogden's shoulder, a small 1" tear in the canvas at lower left and on the cheek, as well as several minor prior reinforcements on the blank reverse side canvas, the painting apparently touched up. An impressive artist signed and dated 1856 original Oil Painting of this historic New Jersey Governor and Statesman.
