Description
This lot consists of a framed watercolor illustration on paper, done in the Luminist style of Robert Salmon (English, 1775-1842). Image depicts a battle at sea, with several sailors floating through the foreground on a remnant of their mast. A detailed and tempestuous composition. This framed piece measures approximately 13.25" x 17".
Reverse side of piece features two affixed labels. One reads, "Newman Galleries" and bears the information of the gallery. The other label is handwritten, and reads as follows:
"Robert Salmon (1775-1842). Signed and dated L.L.H. R.S. 32."
Robert Salmon (English, 1775-1842) was a renowned maritime artist credited with the foundation of American Luminism in the mid- to late-19th century. Salmon was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, and lived in several English cities before making his departure for Boston in 1829, where he would remain until 1840. During his lifetime, Salmon enjoyed great artistic success.
