This lot consists of an ink illustration on paper, done in the avant-garde style of Francis Newton Souza (Goan, 1924-2002). Image depicts a central human figure. A handwritten inscription at top right reads, "Souza". This unframed piece measures approximately 7.5" x 10.75".

Francis Newton Souza (Goan, 1924-2002) was a founding member of Bombay's Progressive Artists' Group. Souza moved to London in the early 1950s, where he nurtured his burgeoning artistic career. Souza is known for drawing on the post-war Art Brut movement and elements of British Neo-romanticism in his (largely erotic) work. Art historian Yashodhara Dalmira writes, "At the heart of Souza's creativity was the belief that society's destructive aspects shouldn't be suppressed, they should be aired and confronted. Be it the hypocrisy of the church, the corruption of the upper classes or the repression of sexuality [...] He was uncovering the underbelly of existence."
