Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas, done in the avant-garde style of Natalia Gontcharova (Russian, 1881-1962). This rich image depicts a humble peasant woman, in shades of mustard and persimmon, moving forward with a cane in one hand and a small pail in the other. A beautiful piece that would grace any collection. Hand-painted inscription at lower right reads, "N. Gontcharowa". Framed dimensions approximately 32" x 23".
Reverse side of piece features an affixed paper label, which reads as follows:
"Leonard Hutton Gallery. 41 East 57th Street, New York, NY 10022. Natalia Gontcharova. Russian: 1881-1962. 'Untitled'. Oil on canvas. 28 x 19 inches. (71,2 x 48,2 cm)."
A circular stamp can also be noted at bottom of frame.
Natalia Gontcharova (Russian, 1881-1962) was a multimedia artist and radical thinker who held an incalculable influence over the Russian avant-garde. The blending of sacred and profane imagery was a motif that Gontcharova was naturally drawn to, leading to a great deal of harassment from the public. Aesthetically, Gontcharova strove to adjoin Western and Eastern traditions, celebrating heritage and everyday culture.
