Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an unframed acrylic painting on canvas, done in the modern abstract style of Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893-1983). Hand inscription at bottom reads, "Miro". This abstract image suggests a playful and avant garde sensibility. Heavy black and jewel-toned forms seem to float through a scarlet, ethereal space. A dynamic and lively addition to any collection. Executed in the abstract, curvilinear style for which Miro is so beloved. Overall measures approximately 23.5" x 15.5".

Reverse side of piece freatures a hand-painted inscription which reads, "Miro", as well as a number of small paper labels. A small stamp to the right of the inscription reads, "Fundacio Joan Miro, Barcelona". An affixed paper label reads the same and is accompanied by a small circular stamp which also bears the name "Joan Miro". Another label and an accompanying stamp bear the name "Musee d'Orsay". Lastly, a small paper label with the name "James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd." bears the name "Joan Miro" and "23" x 15"" typewritten in its center. A circular stamp overlaps this third label, bearing the name "Galeria Mathias Fels, Paris".

Joan Miro was born in Barcelona, Spain on April 20, 1893, the son of a watchmaker. From 1912 he studied at the Barcelona Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Gali. In the first quarter of the 20th century, Barcelona was a cosmopolitan, intellectual city with a craving for the new in art, music and literature. But it was not the place where great art was being made. That place was Paris -- and Miro established himself there at the age of twenty-six.

Once there, Miro made friends with Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Ernest Hemingway, Max Ernst and Paul Klee, and quickly became an adopted member of the Surrealist set. Miro lived alone in Paris in total poverty, but every time he went out, he wore a monocle and white spats. He kept his brushes clean, waxed and polished the floor of his studio and arranged his canvases in neat order.

His careful attention to rich detail permeated not only his personal style, but his artwork as well. Today, millions of people enjoy the playful, visionary pieces he so painstakingly brought to life.
