Description
This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on canvas, done in the modern art style of painter Marc Chagall (French, 1887-1985). "Marc Chagall" is hand written at bottom right corner. In this fluid, romantic image, we see a scene that buzzes with color and movement. Artfully executed in the dreamy style for which Surrealist artist Marc Chagall was so well known. This modernist piece would be a highlight to any collection of fine art. Overall, unframed dimensions are approximately 31.5" x 19.5".
Reverse side of piece features two affixed paper labels. The first, upper label reads as follows:
"Marc Chagall. Pierre Matisse Gallery 1949. Acquired by the gallery in 1949, Excellent oil painting on canvas, 31.5" x 19 3/4 inch. New York. Marc Chagall. 1944."
The second paper label reads as follows:
"Pierre Matisse Gallery. 41 East 57 Street. New York 22, N.Y. Artist: Marc Chagall. Date: April 1944. Title: The green rooster (oil on canvas). No. 000173. Size: 31.5" x 19 3/4" inch."
Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist".
Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opera.
