Description
This is an original Ticuna Indian painting showing mirror images of a man and a Fish, relating to duality among the world of the living and the Spirit world. The painting measures 24 x 14 inches. This painting was acquired during a "Hair Pulling" ceremony among the tribe. When a Teenage girl comes of age, she is paraded into the village and the entire tribe takes turns snatching bits of hair from her head as they dance and sing, with some wearing masks and costumes. The ceremony continues until the young girl is blad, thus signifying her transition from child to woman, yet another duality. Collected in situ in 1970 at the head waters of the Amazon River in Columbia by the Museum owner. Provenance: Part of the permanent display at the Metamora Museum of Oddities, Metamora , Indiana.
