Description
Pen and ink drawing dated May 3, 1943, showing the interior of the artist's Greenwich Village Studio. The studio was once occupied by Winslow Homer. The building was designed in 1857 by Richard Morris Hunt for artist's studios, and housed many well-known artists over the years before it was demolished in 1956. The drawing is full of detail, yet clean-lined and calming, showing a profoundly inviting room with persian rugs scattered across wide-board floors, a long banquette with indian print cover and many big squashy cushions covered in various fabrics, art and antique furniture and plants and piles of books and curious figures of birds perched here and there. The book "Color and Method in Painting" by Ernest W. Watson can be seen on a table. Watson wrote articles about Wengenroth and would later include his work in a book about drawing. A charming and intimate peek into an artist's quarters. Unsigned. (See lot 115 for another view of the same room.) Artists board, approx. 24" x 19".
