Description
1965 dry brush ink drawing on artists board, "Vermont Pasture", showing a farm in Pawlet, Vermont, with a herd of cows grazing along a river by a bridge. Likely made in preparation for a lithograph. Signed lower right; according to a note on the back, the drawing was signed for him by the artist's wife, Harriet, who added her initials. The note adds: "In 1965 Wengenroth visited his old friend Ogden Pleissner who lived in Pawlet, Vt. They had both studied at the Art Students League in N. U. in the 20's. When they began their careers both had studios in the same 10th st. Studio bldg in Greenwich Village IWengenroth's was Winslow Homer's old studio.) It was during this trip that Wengenroth made the drawing". The artist is best known as one of the finest lithographers of the 20th century. His work can be found in many public and private collections including the Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Drawing is loose under clear plastic window between mat boards. Wengenroth apparently redid a section of the drawing, patching in the revised section so well that it's not noticeable except from the back. Size of mat, approx. 28" x 20". Drawing, approx. 25" x 19".
