Description
19th century Russian silver tzedakah charity box, 47.8 troy oz.
Dimensions: 6" Width x 8.5" Height x 5" Depth
Davids notes: Easily one of the best silver Judaica charity boxes I have ever seen in 70 years, probably belongs in a museum. It has Russian marks for silver, Hebrew writing which in part translates to: You should give to the poor anonymously, and German words engraved on the back: Du Sollst den Armen nicht beschaemen(you should not shame the poor). There are Russian marks of 84 and the woman head in profile in several places. The box is a little banged up but appears to be approximately 120 years old,or late 19th century. At current silver prices the silver scrap value of the box is about 950.00.But I feel the historical and religious significance puts it in a higher value. It probably belonged to a large important Synagogue in Eastern Europe. There is an etching of three buildings in the silver on the front of the box which might depict a Synagogue, but we couldn't identify the buildings.
