Description
This is a fine old hand crafted antique Tibetan Buddhist shrine or prayer box (also known as Gau) which encases a painted Buddha image ( faded ) This was used as traveling shrine and carried on one's person when the Buddhist devotee was away from home.Known as a Gau, this portable shrine was used for prayer during travels or pilgrimages to hold sacred objects that offered protective powers. Made from copper, This Gau is further empowered by an image of the Conch shell and the eternal knot, two ancient Buddhist symbols. The shrine measures 5 inches tall x 4 inches wide and was collected in Katmandu Nepal in 1970 by the Museum owner, and was part of the permanent display in the Metamora Museum of Oddities, Metamora, Indiana.
