Mexican theme. Watercolor on paper 3 1/2 x 4 in., 7 x 8 in. The signature was initially hidden under the matting. Anton Braith (b.1836 / d.1905)Anton Braith was born on September 2, 1836 in Biberach, Germany. During his childhood, Braith was a cowboy with his father.In 1851, Braith received a scholarship studying drawing at the Art School in Stuttgart. His teachers were Bernhard von Neher, Heinrich von Rustige and Heinrich Funk.With a fellow student Albert Kappis, Braith moved to Munich in 1860. While in Munich, he met Christian Mali, and the two were friends for the rest of their lives. They were in the artists colony, Brannenburg, Pang and Aresing. Here, Braith did many paintings on the colony and outdoors. In 1867, Braith, along with Mali, Kappis and Carl Ebert, moved to Paris. After success in many exhibitions, Mali and Braith acquired a studio that they nicknamed Schwabenburg (Swabian Castle) in Munich.Having spent many of his holidays in Biberach, Braith bought a villa there. During the years between 1886 to 1889, he traveled to places such as, the north of Germany and Italy.Braith had problems with his liver. He returned to Biberach and having no family, Braith donated his works to the municipality of Biberch, where they opened a museum in his honor and exhibited his paintings.On January 3, 1905, Braith died and was buried next to his friend Christian Mali.Sources Include:www.artcyclopedia.com
