Child, by well listed American Artist Charles Sydney Hopkinson (Massachusetts, 1869 – 1962) | Oil on Canvas, laid to painting aluminum sheet | Signed and dated lower right by the artist “Hopkinson 1925″ | Housed in the original hand-carved gold gilded Newcomb-Macklin Frame, with a custom cradled panel mounted on the back of a painting | Detailed museum label identifying painting on verso of Fitchburg Art Museum, Massetuceotts | Dimensions: 44″ H x 37.5” W x 2" D | | Ms. Child was a prominent fine art figure in Boston, Mass., Founder of the School of Fine Arts at the Boston Museum of Fine Art, later founder of the Child-Walker School of Art and the School of Fine Arts, Crafts and Decorative Design in Boston & Italy. Literature: Painting listed page 19 of Portraits by Charles Hopkinson, Joan Hopkinson Shurcliff and William Shurcliff, 1988, 19. Exhibited: Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, Mass. (1973-2016. Notes: The Newcomb-Macklin Company of Chicago, Illinois was a nationally prominent manufacturer of hand-carved and gilded picture frames. The company was in operation from 1883 until 1979. Many of Newcomb-Macklin's frames designed in the early 20th century reflected the esthetics of the Arts and Crafts movement that flourished in the United States between 1900 and 1925. Newcomb-Macklin frames in the arts and crafts style are today regarded as antiques and are often utilized by collectors and dealers to lend an air of authenticity to the framing of period American paintings.
