Rea Irvin studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute before helping launch and work at the New Yorker as an illustrator and (first) art editor, later rising to art director. Irvin helped to define that publication with images that were witty and culturally aware, with trembly outlines and poached eyes. He also contributed to Life and Cosmopolitan magazines starting at age 25. He created hundreds of illustrations, 169 covers, layout, design, and the sharp-casual Irvin type font.
