Description
3 15/16" Top End Gainey Clovis found in Lake County, Tennessee w/ COA's X2. With the passing of Walt McIntyre his collection came available to the public by a chance encounter of his wife with Kevin Jerome of St Charles while on a cruise.... This author saw pictures in the first few days and shook his head in disbelief. To many cumberlands and clovis's in cases which tossed up red flags (because most of the ones on the market are modern). To our dismay we showed up at Collinsville shortly after Kevin started dispersing the collection to discover that our gut instincts were so very wrong. He did have a few with a rechip or restoration here and there with a handful that got parted out that were modern but past that it was the most Good Old Fluted points we had seen hit the market at one time. Seeing that many in one place was a bit overwhelming. Upon picking up the collection Kevin dropped a frame off at Jerry Dickey's which was kind of on the way home from the McIntyre estate. There was a silent auction on the frames at Collinsville which Jerry brought with him to the show to return to Kevin. Of the pieces presented from Walt's estate this was by far the best made of the Clovis points. Not the largest but for its type it's a monster. In the 1980's Walt purchased this point from Dr Young or someone managing the sale of Dr. Youngs collection. Jerry Dickey and Ryan Keele both papered this point. They both leaned toward it being made of Kaolin Chert which is what it is. Jerry wanted to call it a Redstone or St. Louis Fluted Clovis and Ryan just went with Clovis to avoid debate. By manufacture, thinness, fine finish pressure flaking and outstanding distance pressure flutes it can only be a Gainey Clovis which is one of the rarest of Clovis to find intact because of their thinness. At nearly 4 inches this is the longest ancient one of the type we have seen to date and it is what we consider flawless. ex-Walt McIntyre, ex Dr Young and Jeff Gower Collections.
