1866 Historic "Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War"
1866-Dated Civil War Era, First Edition, Harper's Pictorial History Of The Civil War, Complete in 2 Volumes, by Alfred H. Guernsey and Henry M. Alden, Published by Star Publishing Company, Chicago, IL., Very Fine.
This pleasing Complete 2-Volume Set of "Harper's The Pictorial History Of The Civil War," by Alfred H. Guernsey and Henry M. Alden is large in size measuring about 11.25" x 15.75". There are 998 Illustrations, Maps and Portraits in a combined 836 pages. One map is a large color fold-out of the Southern States. These 2 Volumes tell the story of the Civil War beginning with the birth of our nation and ending with the April 15, 1865 Assassination Death of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. The bindings are hard cover cloth with part leather, and with gold gilt embossed printing on the spine. The covers are worn from use, and the spines are partially peeled off. The inside pages are clean and well printed with only a bit of scattered tone primarily on the edges. Page 23 has been repaired with Japanese archival tissue paper, other minor splits possible yet overall very solid and impressive. The large, color 4-panel large fold-out illustrated map on page 130 is torn in the center folds and if removed should be sealed for possible display. Overall, there are many worthy illustrations and these complete 2-Volume Sets have often been broken up to remove the more valuable single illustrations to sell for display. A standard contemporaneous illustrated account of the Civil War. In better condition than usually seen.
