1785 Imprint "An Election Sermon, Preached Before the General Court of New-Hampshire..." by Jeremy Belknap
June 2, 1785-Dated First Edition Imprint titled, "An Election Sermon, Preached Before the General Court, of New-Hampshire...", by Jeremy Belknap (1744-1798), printed by Melcher and Osborne, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Fine.
Rare first edition original Imprint and historic Sermon delivered by one of the first American historians with observations on the American Revolution and the future of New Hampshire, 48 pages, 6" x 9", paper wraps, 1" of the bottom edge selvage of title page trimmed and signature of a later owner dated 1880 at top, otherwise untrimmed worn edges from actual use in reading. Belknap graduated Harvard in 1762, and accepted a ministry in Dover, New Hampshire, serving for 20 years at the Congregational Church. He was Chaplain of the New Hampshire troops during the Siege of Boston, and began writing the History of New Hampshire from 1784-1792. He moved to Boston to become Pastor of the Federal Street Church, eventually becoming a member of numerous intellectual organizations.
