Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Thutmose III, ca. 1479 to 1425 BCE. A finely preserved pendant carved from creamy beige-hued steatite of a characteristic scarab form that bears the cartouche of Pharaoh Thutmose III on the underside. The topside exhibits insectile features such as sinuous legs retracted beneath the folded wing carapace and a triangular head with a protruding clypeus; a suspension hole is drilled lengthwise through the body. The underside features the cartouche of Thutmose III flanked by a pair of falcons with hieroglyphs including a sun disc, a board game, and a scarab. Above the cartouche is a uraeus cobra, a seated deity, and a scarab, and below is a scarab with broad wings extending from its sides.
