Edward Giobbi was born in Katonah, New York, in 1926 to Italian immigrant parents and grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut. As a boy he heard stories about the great Italian artists from his parents, and grew enamored with the idea of becoming an artist himself. After serving as an infantryman in World Ward II, he began formal art studies, starting with a school in Boston Provincetown before moving to Italy in 1951.

He studied fresco and sculpture in Florance, embracing his cultural heritage. He returned to New York in 1954 and became involved with Abstract Expressionists, but sought to maintain his classical training and cultural heritage in his art. In Giobbi's own words: "It was senseless for me to give up Giotto and Masaccio for Gorkey and Pollack. I felt that I could learn from them all."*
