Description
**Originally Listed At $1750**

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. Finely delineated in oil on canvas, a painting of Madonna in Glory - the Virgin Mary dressed in her traditional jewel tone red and blue vestments with a circle of 12 stars radiating from the halo of light around her visage. Mary's face is a perfect oval shape and presents an alabaster white complexion with closed eyes, an elegant arched browline, an aquiline nose, coral pink lips, and rosy cheeks. This iconography with Mary's countenance encircled by 12 stars is also seen in paintings depicting the Woman of the Apocalypse and Baroque interpretations of the Crown of Immortality. The oval composition is set in an attractive gilt frame adorned with ornate floral appliques at the corners. Size: 7.75" W x 9.5" H (19.7 cm x 24.1 cm); 12.125" W x 13.875" H (30.8 cm x 35.2 cm) framed

The Woman of the Apocalypse is described in the New Testament's Book of Revelation (12:1, 2, & 5): "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. And she being with child cried, travailing in birth. .... And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne."

For other compositions that feature similar iconography see Diego Velazquez's "Immaculate Conception" (1618), Peter Paul Ruben's "The Virgin as the Woman of the Apocalpyse" (ca. 1623-24), Carlo Dolci's "Madonna in Glory" (ca. 1670), and Miguel Cabrera's "The Virgin of the Apocalypse" (1760).

Condition
Painting presents charming craquelure throughout. The colors are still vibrant, however, a professional cleaning would bring them out even more. Frame shows some cracks to the internal surround and some losses to the decorative appliques and peripheries as shown.
