New World, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 18th century CE. A socketed steel billhook with a tall wooden pole attached. The billhook is a cutting tool that has been used around the world, and most likely since the Bronze Age, for agriculture and forestry. The blade is straight near the handle and then has an increasingly strong curve toward the end; it is sharpened on the inside of the curve. Size: 91" L x 5.5" W (231.1 cm x 14 cm)
Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired in 2010; ex-Guadalajara, Mexico market collection

Condition
Pole is lightly weathered but overall in nice condition. The blade has a nice iron patina and the form is very well preserved with just a few tiny nicks from its edges.
