Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

Robert Redbird Jr. (Native American, Kiowa, 1939-2016), "Shadow Watch" colored serigraph. Ca. 1990s. Signed and numbered (009/900) at lower right. A stunning composition depicting three Native American women wrapped in blankets delineated in Redbird's signature style. Upon his death, Redbird was paid tribute by then governor of Oklahoma (Redbird's native state) Brad Henry with the following statement, "Robert Redbird's art is full of his conviction that Native American culture is a beautiful way of life and his art conveys his feeling for Kiowa tradition and ceremonies, for the spiritual in the culture of many tribes and for the world of nature." An elegant and quite large original colored serigraph, signed and numbered by the artist, and set in custom framing under glass. Size: 43.5" W x 33" H (110.5 cm x 83.8 cm)

Robert Redbird was born in Oklahoma in 1939 to Kiowa parents - his family's tribal affiliation to the Kiowa Gourd Clan. From the start, Redbird demonstrated a keen interest in art. As his technique improved, Redbird especially excelled in watercolor and featured Kiowa folklore in his paintings. As we see in this example, dramatic blanket folds of rich color were delineated in the attire of his subjects. He also included Native American pottery, eagles, feathers and mountains in his compositions. Redbird has preserved Kiowa culture through his artwork. Two of his original paintings may be seen in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.

Provenance: private Palm Desert, California, USA collection; acquired by descent from Maurice (Red) Silverstein who was President of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios) International and Betty Silverstein, known as Betty Bryant, who was a successful actress in Australia prior to marrying Red.
