Pre-Columbian, northeastern Belize, found near the town of Altun Ha, Maya Classic Period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A delightful zoomorphic knapped chert eccentric, made from a creamy white stone, in the form of what looks like a standing jaguar with a tall, upwardly-curled tail. Stones carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. They are most common in the eastern part of the Maya world and Altun Ha is known for them. Size: 6.75" W x 4.25" H (17.1 cm x 10.8 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
