Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A hand-built redware pottery jar with a stylized portrait on the front walls. The almond-shaped eyes flank an upturned nose and puffy lips, and a helmet brim or extended browline is defined by a protruding bar that stretches between both ears. Traces of brown pigment are visible across the exterior surfaces. Size: 3.7" W x 3" H (9.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: private Raleigh, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Jane Larson collection, acquired in the mid-1950s in Panama

Condition
Minor abrasions and nicks to base, body, facial features, and rim, with fading and chipping to original pigment, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Great earthen deposits throughout.
