Description
This is a superb large and rare map of county Kent, England. It shows the county divided into 5 Lathes and sub-divided into 62 Hundreds. Insets are of Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals and an elaborate cartouche illustrates various products of industry, commerce and agriculture. London is shown in the upper left. Detailed notes of historical and topographical facts fill all the available space surrounding the map. Much added detail includes towns, churches, rectories, vicarages, charity schools, roads, distances, topography, rivers, fields, forests, etc. This is from the Royal English Atlas issued by Bowen and Kitchin, which was not a commercial success, hence only few copies remain to this day. The imprint below the map bears a wonderful collection of the cartographers of the day: Bowles, Sayer & Bennett.
