Condition
**Painting is in near-original state with very little restorative work done. Condition is now fair/poor state and the painting is in need of conservation. Work has not been relined, and the stretchers appear to be period and have wormhole and ant hole damage. The back of the canvas has two patches and scattered areas of abrading and losses to thread/weave. Canvas has significant stretcher lines with convex buckling to the paint surface that has caused some flaking and cupping along top stretcher and subsequent tearing along the lower left and upper right stretchers. Painted surface has craquelure, soiling and some abrading at canvas edges but does not exhibit any significant inpainting; under UV light nothing particularly fluoresces, even though the left orb and brow of the left eye appear to have some inpainted repair. The horizontal seamline in the canvas is also visible and slightly protruded. There are probably some inpainted "touch-ups" by the torn repairs and along the bottom quadrant, but it is difficult to assess due to the unevenness of the paint surface. The frame is structurally sound and in overall good condition with some repairs to piercework on pediment, some small losses to right edge and light separation at frame miters. Frame otherwise exhibits light nicks and scratches, and wear to pigment and gilding, as is to be expected with age and material.
