Item Details
Description
Vacheron Constantin, Extremely Rare and Early Pivoted Detent Pocket Chronometer, Triple Signed, 18k Gold Open Faced Case, circa 1860 Case: 49mm, 18k gold, open face, with hinged cuvette and caseback, No. 82708 Dial: enamel dial with black Roman numeral hour markers, large subsidiary dial for running seconds, fleur-de-lis style hands Movement: Vacheron Constantin signed M. LeCoultre ebauche, key wind, gilt finished, pivoted detent escapement, movement number located under dial side matching case number, No. 82708 Signed: VC in case, dial, movement This timepiece is accompanied by its VC signed presentation box with additional mainspring, and a associated key for winding and setting LOT ESSAY From research, it is determined that Vacheron Constantin produced less than 8 examples of pocket watches utilizing a chronometer escapement. Only three other are known to be triple signed, such as this timepiece offered. The gilt VC signed pivoted detent escapement ebauche appears to be the work of either Eugene or his son, Marius LeCoultre. We have seen this movement also show up from Rossel & Fils (later sold to Constant Girard-Golay in 1906, and later to become Girard Perregaux). This extremely rare timepiece is an outstanding survivor and from its condition, a clearly cherished item within its ownership history. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
