These were made by various foundries from the 1880s into the 1920s, in a variety of materials--brass, bronze, steel, aluminum, etc.--with various finishes.



This is a fairly unusual and hard-to-find copper gilt set, cast in iron. It appears to be the Verona Factory design, as several companies made similar bookends. They are hand stamped #802 on the back.



The casting is very fine on this set, with great detail and definition. Fortunately, nobody's ever cleaned or polished these, so they still have their original patina and natural aging.



H.D. Eagan bought a tract of land near the present day Allegheny River Boulevard to build a plan in 1904. He operated the plant as General Casting Company until 1907 when the plant was sold to Standard Steel Car Company and began operation as the Verona Steel Casting Company. Verona was known for producing doorstops, bookends, and ash trays. They typically marked their products with Verona and or a 3 digit number. This pair is hand stamped # 802

They are heavy, each bookend weighs approx 3lbs 3 oz.
