50 assorted original hand colored engravings from 1790’s to early 1800’s



James Sowerby was a British naturalist and illustrator. He was born in London, where he studied art at the Royal Academy and worked with William Curtis, whose Flora Londinensis he illustrated. In 1790, he began the first volume of his vast project: a 36-volume work on the botany of England, which was published over the next 24 years, contained 2592 hand-coloured engravings and was known simply as Sowerby's Botany.

Condition: Some foxing and speckles, an occasional stain. Visible plate marks and original coloring. Each print has the original text page, see pictures for detail condition. Mostly good, some fair.
