Known for his explorations in Africa, Henry Stanley found the Scottish missionary explorer David Livingstone, whom most had assumed had been lost. His acquaintance with continuing expedition with Livingstone led to the expedition for the relief of Emin Pasha, an Ottoman physician. This voyage was notorious for causing the deaths of many of its members to disease and disaster. The events of this expedition were recorded in ‘Through the Dark Continent’, a work that describes the sights and scenes of Africa.
This First American edition of ‘Through the Dark Continent’ retells Stanley’s expedition including locating the source of the Nile, circumnavigating Lake Victoria, meeting wealthy kings, and battling cannibals, before his final return home.
