His acquaintance with continuing expedition with Livingstone led to the expedition for the relief of Emin Pasha, an Ottoman physician. This voyage was notorious for causing the deaths of many of its members to disease and disaster. The events of this expedition were recorded in ‘Through the Dark Continent’, a work that describes the sights and scenes of Africa.
