Description
Includes 1881 National Infantry Tactics and Standard Infantry Tactics owned by John L Miller Jr. Co. C 18th Regt. 2nd Brigade. 1866 Upton Emery Infantry Tactics owned by Maj. Theodore K. Gibbs. Rifle and Carbine Firing, Captain Stanhope W. Blunt, 1886, New York; and a copy of Cavalry Tactics. Also includes 2 hat cords dating from the American Indian Wars, dating circa 1875. One is bullion and the other is bullion/wool.

Dimensions: 5 3/4 inches tall X 4 inches wide; 14.6 cm tall X 10.2 cm wide. The hat cords measure 22 inches circumference; 55.9 cm circumference. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: The spine on the tactics books are worn, with general age wear. The largest book has severe water and age damage, it is missing the cover page and the front cover is broken. Hat cords have age and use wear.

Provenance: From a collection in West Virginia. For more information on Major Theodore K Gibbs: Gibbs was the youngest son of Rhode Island Governor William Channing Gibbs. Gibbs (1840-1909) enlisted in the United States Army in October 1861 as the second lieutenant of the 1st Regiment of the United States Artillery and served throughout the American Civil War (1861-1865). He was appointed first lieutenant on February 20, 1862, and earned his next two rankings for the injuries he suffered and his gallantry during the Battle of Olustee, Florida, in February 1864 and the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, in June 1864. He resigned from the Army on May 1, 1870, with the rank of major.
